Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Munhall District Curriculum

With the goals to have students at or above state academic standards as well as students who are able to think independently and grow, through the schooling process, into good and responsible citizens, Steel Valley School District focuses on Core curriculum in the areas of reading, writing, math and science from the earliest grades all the way through high school. Students are taught in a way to provide them the foundation that they will need not only to meet those state requirements, but to adequately learn in their other classes as well.

Middle and high school students have the opportunity to further specialize their learning to better match up to their future goals in vocation or career. Students are required to take core classes, but are also given options to choose which electives and learning concentrations they wish to focus on, within specific guidelines and graduation requirements. Students take courses in social studies, music and the arts, business, computer, fitness, wellness, world languages and much more.

Chalk Talk: The Value of Positive Reinforcement

There are ways to motivate children to positive behavior both in the classroom and at home and one of them is positive reinforcement. Students who have sporadic moments of positive reinforcement are likely to respond. For example, when praise is amply given for a completed task, this is positive reinforcement. Students will often respond better to positive reinforcement if it is spontaneously given rather than a rule that every time they do something even mildly well they will be rewarded. Keeping positive reinforcement less predictable will keep the students more on their toes and more likely to perform consistently. Positive reinforcement can be verbal but it can also be in other forms such as a bonus point or a game day at the end of a hard project. There are other types of reinforcement, but this type of positive reinforcement can be helpful both in the classroom and at home.
