Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nelsonville District Curriculum

Nelsonville’s high school social studies curriculum introduces students to a variety of topics, from economics and history to geography and government. The government curriculum emphasizes the need for civic engagement. The processes involved in elections, including requirements candidates must fulfill, is a central component of the course. Students examine current political parties, as well as those that existed in the past, to develop an appreciation for the issues that have been, and continue to be, of importance.

Government students also analyze the Constitution in great detail. Students explore the philosophical ideas that underlie the Constitution’s development. An examination of influential documents, such as the Magna Carta and the Federalist Papers, is also undertaken. Learners explore the amendment process as well, and identify the ways in which Congress and the Supreme Court have changed and interpreted the Constitution over the years. The curriculum is designed so that students are imparted with key concepts in their world and have the background to discuss and study these further in college.

Chalk Talk: Longer School Days Benefit Students

The notion of extending the school day is nothing new. In fact, districts across the nation have implemented extended school days in an effort to boost college and career readiness. Longer school days give students the opportunity to take additional classes that they might not otherwise get to take. Be they electives or required courses, the additional time each day lends to a more well rounded K-12 education. As students develop more balanced skills that are applicable in a variety of contexts, they also become more prepared for college, the workforce, or other post-secondary pursuits. Having the skills, knowledge, and tools to do so is essential for success. Furthermore, there is a strong positive correlation between longer school days and academic achievement. Studies show double-digit gains in scores on standardized measures of science, math, and English among students that attend an extended day school.
