In English, the standards focus on literacy not only in literature but across all subjects and even current events. It also focuses on writing, listening, and comprehension skills that will payoff for students both in the workforce and in college. The schools within New Britain offer a wide range of opportunities for their students. From the Priority Schools program with seeks to serve New Britain's large population of needy children to the Early Intervention Program that focuses attention on children with learning and behavior issues at an early age. The program also trains teachers to use the best classroom practices to service these children so they are not left behind and they can find tools to help them succeed. Chalk Talk: Sparking Interest in the Classroom

There are a lot of buzz words out there in the teaching community, "differentiation" and "tiering" to name just a couple. For most parents though, it may not be clear what exactly these mean but nevertheless, these practices are working for our students. What it boils down to is making the classroom an exciting place that reaches all students at all levels. It means trying all different kinds of activities in the classroom and changing it up to meet the needs of most school's increasingly diverse populations. It not only means reaching the English language learner or the learning disabled but the students who are kinesthetic, visual, or auditory learners. Teachers around the country are sharing ideas and lessons to make the classroom a place that students cannot wait to enter and the content they learn lasts a lifetime.
