Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Martinsville District Curriculum

Students learn the skills, knowledge, and concepts set out in the curriculum as well as an understanding and appreciation of the arts, health and fitness, science, social studies, and other important subjects according to guidelines and requirements laid out by the West Virginia Department of Education. Students are thus prepared for high school and post high school studies. They are taught in such a way that they can learn in the context of modern technologies as well.

By the time students graduate high school, they have been equipped to have a good grasp on literacy, technology, mathematics, health, physical fitness, creative arts, and are socially equipped to asses and handle situations. High school students, before graduation, are encouraged to take courses that will help them along the path to their career goals. They are offered advanced classes for those students who wish to take them and would benefit the most from the college preparatory coursework.

Chalk Talk: How to Pick the Best College for You

So you’ve made it through nearly 12 years of school! Congratulations! Now you’re probably asking yourself whether or not to go to college, and if so, which one? Choosing a college seems intimidating at the outset, but don’t become discouraged. As you go through the process of selecting the college that is right for you, it will probably become clear which school will be best for you. Begin by narrowing your search. List the things that are most important to you in a college: perhaps its location, degree options, emphasis on a specific career, fame of a specific course of study, or other consideration. If you can, narrow down your search to about five schools and then begin the application process. You will probably have to pay an application fee as well as write some essays and possibly take tests. Complete this by the deadlines and wait to hear back. When you get your responses, consider what each school is offering you and for what price. With this information in hand, you are ready to make the best choice for you.
