Chalk Talk: Encourage Reading at Home to Build Skills

Reading at home is a critical component of your child’s skills development in language arts and other school subjects. Students that read often have more highly developed language skills, including more expansive vocabularies. Reading provides children with insight into the rules of speech as well, including the usage of proper grammar and spelling, and how to structure sentences effectively. There are benefits in other subject areas as well. Students who read on a regular basis demonstrate improved concentration in social studies, science, math, and art. Frequent readers also have more vivid imaginations and are able to see things from another’s perspective with greater ease. At home, reading can act as a great way for your child to wind down after a long day. Reading before bed has been shown to facilitate sleep quicker and promote better sleep throughout the night.
