Newcastle District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students in Newcastle are taught according to the Ontario Curriculum which provides individual, standards-based frameworks for each academic subject and program available to students. The Elementary Curriculum is designed so that students are introduced to the skills and knowledge base of each academic subject, and then progresses them through increasingly complex topics and concepts during middle school. In high school, the Secondary Curriculum guides in-depth learning in the subjects and also offers Innovative Programs that connect the interests of students with future college and career opportunities.

We currently cover the following Newcastle-area school district: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newcastle District Curriculum

Schools in Newcastle follow the curriculum established by the Ministry of Education which spans all the subject areas and grade levels, and also provides for programs that prepare students for post-secondary life. It provides a framework for organizing the delivery of knowledge on a comprehensive level. The curriculum describes the skills and knowledge that students should develop within each subject in order to become proficient in it. In addition to the basic knowledge, students also master critical thinking skills.

The Secondary Innovative Programs include a Specialist High Skills Major, Co-operative Education, and Dual Credit Programs. Students are assisted with the transitional aspects of these academic options and have the advantage of facilities and advisors that support their learning. The Secondary level curriculum also offers French Language Education so that students who wish to graduate with bilingual language skills are able to do so.

Chalk Talk: Applying for College

One of the first things to remember when applying to college is that guidance counselors are there to help and assist you throughout the process so make sure you know them and let them get to know you as well. Colleges and universities are happy to field questions from applicants, but can tire quickly of a nagging mother or father inquiring about their child’s application status. By completing relevant volunteer and service work, students often increase their chances of getting into their chosen universities, making community service an important part of high school. Again, remember that this is a major step forward towards adulthood. Let your child take that step and be responsible for his or her applications and follow-ups.
