Newport District and Curriculum

The schools in Newport aim their curriculum toward giving the students a quality education. They base this off of the Oregon Common Core State Standards which are focused on Math and Language Arts and support the frameworks for learning in Science and Social Studies. Technology is also an important facet of learning and students are increasingly exposed to technology as learning devices and as subjects of learning.

We currently cover the following Newport-area school district: Lincoln County School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newport District Curriculum

Mathematics, at Newport Schools, begins with students learning to recognize three basic shapes, the triangle, square and circles. Soon students learn how to measure these shapes and others, including the perimeter and the volume. By the time the students finish high school they learn how to use a number of equations to find points in a shape or how to configure the sides of a shape. These students learn how to look at problems like this in an analytical fashion.

After students learn how to create letters and learn their sounds, they are ready to fly with the writing curriculum at Newport Schools. In the early years they learn how to use writing as a form of communication as they learn how to write letters or to inform others how to do something. As they mature they are able to use their writing skills in the other areas of learning. In high school they could possible be asked to document how they could feed themselves for one day with one dollar. This would include any recipes and a complete nutritional analysis.

Chalk Talk: Playtime’s Role in Development

Children love to play, but play is also useful in developing social and emotional growth. This growth gives children the boost that they need to succeed in school. Parents can have a role in developing the child in these areas simply by playing with the child. This time together shows the child the importance they have in the parents’ lives. This time also shows children how to listen and interact with adults, which also translates into the classroom. Simply playing a game of hide and seek, or just singing and dancing will help the parents and children to grow closer as the children are making leaps and bounds in their emotional and social growth.
