Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newton District Curriculum
An action plan enables students, teachers and parents to monitor the student’s daily progress. The student and teacher are responsible for designing the plan. Once the plan is designed the student is accountable and must achieve a particular set of milestones that lead the student to a successful goal. The plan may also include a recommendation for parent involvement such as reading time at home or homework for skill reinforcement. Students, teachers and parents can specifically identify the student’s strength and weakness with this Action Plan and work to improve the weak areas.

- Integrated Preschool Programs - Newton Public Schools offer and Integrated Preschool Program. These classrooms hold a maximum of fifteen students. The class is composed of both special needs learners and appropriately developing learners. Integrated classes are taught by Master level teachers and each class has an instructional assistant. Curriculum is based on Massachusetts Curriculum Framework.
- M.E.T.C.O. Program - The Metropolitan Council for Education Opportunity developed this program to increase academic opportunities for students from Boston to Springfield. The students bring different economic, religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds to the schools, enriching the environment for the whole community. Those students first apply to the M.E.T.C.O. program and once admitted are enrolled in the Newton Public School.
- Career and Vocational Technology Education - The Career and Vocational Technology Education department offers a variety of programs for student pursuing vocation technology career. The program was awarded the 2009 Gold Winner of W3 Awards in the Student Category. This award is given to school with the most innovative and creative student web design. The judges also examined functionality and usability when choosing the recipient of this award.
