Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newtown District Curriculum

Literacy is a very important part of the English language curriculum. Students start in kindergarten learning the foundations of reading, writing, and speaking skills. By the time they reach graduation, students are expected to be able to read at a college level and have excellent critical reading skills. Similarly, in Math and Science students are challenged to apply what they learn into real-world scenarios so they gain a deeper understanding.

Newtown is also a member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). This organization of schools in the New England area focuses on providing the highest standards in education. Participating schools are required to undertake extensive and rigorous examinations of their curriculum and core beliefs to assure they are maintaining the NEASC’s high standards. Students and faculty are required to incorporate not only the best lesson and curriculum, but also school culture and leadership.

Chalk Talk: Options for Paying for College

The cost of higher education is enormous and growing every year and it’s very important to know your options. Most school counselors specialize in knowing all the ends and outs of different options. First, apply for any and all scholarships you can find, even if you aren’t entirely certain you qualify or not, apply anyway. Small scholarships can quickly add up and before you know it, you have a semester paid for. Consider going to a good state school, instead of a private school or ivy league. You can get a high quality education and save tens of thousands of dollars. Lastly, student loans are still a viable option. They are very low interest, and if you agree to teach in low income areas for a number of years after graduation, you can even have them entirely forgiven. So never let cost sway you away from college, there are always options out there if you take the time to search for them.
