Niagara-on-the-Lake District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Niagara-on-the-Lake use the Ontario Curriculum as the plan for instruction and assessment in all core subjects. This curriculum provides a grade level overview during the elementary and secondary years for what students are expected to learn in their courses. The curriculum also specifies the concepts which are covered within the subjects and these foster the critical, reasoning and problem-solving skills that students are also expected to gain. These expectations, or learning objectives, are used as the basis for assessments given by the EQAO to measure student proficiency in achieving the standards.

We currently cover the following Niagara-on-the-Lake-area school districts: Niagara Catholic District School Board and District School Board of Niagara.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Niagara-on-the-Lake District Curriculum

In Math, student learning centers on the topics of numeracy, geometry and measurement, quantitative data analysis, and algebraic operations. Understanding of these topics is developed during the elementary and intermediate years, and in secondary school students will start with a foundational course covering concept knowledge in geometry, algebra, and data analysis which prepares them for more advanced Math.

In English, students begin with fundamentals of phonics, language development, reading and decoding strategies, listening and speaking exercises, and significant opportunities to write. This foundation establishes the basis for the analytic, interpretative and representational work that students will do in their secondary years English courses. Literacy is established so that students are strong readers across the curricular areas, and supports learning in all subjects.

Chalk Talk: What Is the Difference Between Academic and Applied Math?

When students enter secondary school, they have a choice to take Grade 9 Foundations of Math in the Academic or the Applied format. Both course formats follow the same curricular expectations, the primary difference is in the instructional purpose of each course. The Academic courses focus in on theoretical aspects of the math concepts and the Applied format focuses in on the practical applications of the same concepts. The goal in having two versions is to offer options to fit the ways in which students process learning and information differently.
