Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nicholasville District Curriculum
In English/Language Arts in Nicholasville, students are expected to learn reading, writing, speaking, listening, observing, inquiring and how to use technology to communicate. Much emphasis is put upon learning to write effectively and with good English usage. Your child will have writing expectations for each grade level. In the classrooms, teachers will continually assess your child to see that he/she is meeting those expectations.
In Math, students are encouraged to meet standard criteria that the Department of Education sets out. Elementary students learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Algebra and geometry concepts are introduced in elementary classes and continued through high school. PERKS is in effect and that is a program for judging effectiveness of Math programs. There is a Math and Science partnership program in the schools designed to encourage innovative teaching.

Keeping Informed: Recent Nicholasville Educational News
- Dream Big - West Jessamine High School has a Dream Big essay contest going. The contest is to write about pursuing a goal and needs to include your plan to achieve it also. A local community group is sponsoring it and will present the winning student with a prize.
- Attendance Works - Attendance is an issue in Nicholasville and a program is in place to deal with it. Attendance Works is a program that operates throughout the state to encourage better school attendance. With better attendance comes better grades.
- Photography Club - East Jessamine High School Photography Club won a national community service project contest for a video about the county’s Primate Rescue Center. The prize was $3000 of which part will be donated to the rescue center. Congratulations on this worthwhile project.
