Niles Charter Township District and Curriculum

The curriculum used at Niles Community Schools is based on the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) and the rigorous standards it holds for all students. The MMC has also incorporated key college and career ready standards that prepare students for life after graduation. The curriculum helps guide the scope and sequence of learning and also provides teachers with learning objectives that ensure all students will be prepared for their next school years. The objectives state the skills, knowledge, and critical thinking opportunities that are grade-level appropriate in each subject, however educators are able to determine the best instructional method to teach these lessons to their students.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Niles Charter Township District Curriculum

At Niles Community Schools, each of the science classes teach the students to look beneath the surface when observing items. This may be the sky when studying weather, or the outer parts of a flower. Soon, though, the students begin to look at the different types of clouds and what they may mean. Or they may discover the cells in a plant which are different from those of an animal. This way of studying is carried out whether the students are studying chemistry, biology, earth science or more.

The students at Niles Community Schools begin studying literature from their first day at school. They begin by looking at picture book and then they continue by learning how to compare characterization, plot developments, and points of view. They are also introduced early to non-fiction and learn to recognize the differences between fiction and non-fiction, and fact and opinion. These items are then applied to the writing skills the students develop to help them reflect their individuality while keeping their audience in mind.

Chalk Talk: Supportive Environments

Children need to feel encouraged and supported at home to help them succeed at school. Parents can help in many ways. One is to allow younger children the opportunity to play as this is one way that they learn creativity and socialization skills. It is also important that children are given some time to be by themselves as well as with others. Most important, parents need to make sure to listen to their children when they talk and to open the door to two-way conversations that give encouragement. During the teenager years, these early practices will also help develop a child’s sense of independence as well as allow them to reflect on the ties that bind them to their family. Each of these can help children feel better about themselves which will be reflected in their lives.
