North Battleford District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Living Sky School Division No. 202 is located in Northwest Central Saskatchewan, in the heart of wheat and oil country. The district encompasses a wide geographical area consisting of 18 communities, including he Battlefords and many First Nations communities and Hutterite colonies. Living Sky serves 5,700 students in 29 schools—five of which are located in North Battleford, SK. An interesting fact about the school district, which was formed in June 2005, is that a third grader from the Hillsvale Colony School selected its name. Living Sky School Division No. 202 has developed Scope and Sequence guidelines for English language arts. Each grade level is organized by academic standards in the areas of “compose & create” and “comprehend and respond.”

We currently cover the following North Battleford-area school district: Living Sky School Division No. 202.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Battleford District Curriculum

Each curricular standard includes the expected student outcome, the big ideas and enduring understanding that guide the learning within the standard, the overarching essential questions of each standard, the knowledge students are expected to gain, the tasks students are expected to be able to do, and the evidence of student understanding. Similarly, the district has devised the Math Progression of Outcomes that show how students’ learning in math progresses from grade level to grade level in the areas of place value, patterns and relations, and fractions.

The curricular guidelines also includes expected student outcomes by grade level, students’ progression of understanding why the math is the way is it, the progression of the learning (from rote counting to skip counting to comparing and relating numbers, etc.), the big ideas, the mathematical vocabulary that is important at each grade level, the instructional strategies that are used, and some misconceptions about mathematical ideas at each grade level.

Chalk Talk: Understanding Reading Level

Teachers know that children in their class will read at all different grade levels, so it is important for them to help students find books at the appropriate reading level—not too easy or challenging. This is why they must understand reading levels that state the grade level each student is currently reading at. This number can range from 1.0 to 12.9. For example, a student who is reading at a grade level of 3.5 is reading at the level expected of a child in his/her fifth month of third grade. Unless teachers have a class of students reading at a similar level, they will likely have students reading a great deal below the level they should be reading at. It is not of much benefit to these students to read books that match up with the grade they are in because they are too challenging for them to read fluently and comprehend.
