Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Canton District Curriculum

The world languages curriculum for high school students ensures that students graduate with the ability to communicate in another language. To develop these skills, students learn how to use listening, reading, and viewing strategies to determine the meaning of messages. Presentational skills are acquired, so students have the ability to deliver information to small and large groups of people. Students also engage in on-on-one conversations with other students, in which they refine the ability to express feelings, emotions, and make requests in their language of study.

The North Canton physical education curriculum includes learning experiences that promote the development of fine and gross motor skills. Students learn various patterns of movement associated with stretching, playing games, and engaging in sporting activities, and also acquire improved balance and muscle tone. Children learn about the value of physical activity and the benefits it has on physical and mental wellbeing.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

Choosing a tutor to work with your child should involve several steps to ensure they have the right content knowledge and disposition to help your child. First, a tutor should have subject-matter knowledge that will allow them to effectively teach. Tutors should be experts in the field in which they are teaching and be able to convey that knowledge to your child. Second, tutors should be able to engage your child in learning in ways that are fun and creative. Oftentimes half the battle of learning a new topic is keeping your child interested in what they are learning. Lastly, the tutor should be friendly and approachable. Sometimes children fall behind in school because they feel like they can’t ask their teacher a question or that their teacher doesn’t have the time to work with them. Tutors should present themselves as someone your child can come to for help and be a trusted resource.
