Chalk Talk: How Downtime Can Boost Brain Power

Studies have concluded that being creative is a great way to enhance learning, productivity, and personal insight. But you don’t need to be a painter or musician to tap into your imaginative side. Creativity can occur when you are daydreaming, problem solving, or even relaxing. In fact, the brain is more active during periods of rest. If the brain doesn’t have downtime, it is susceptible to burnout and blockage. When you take a break from absolute concentration, your wandering thoughts (mindless as they may be) free your brain and re-energize it. When the brain” idles”, it is often hard at work organizing your thoughts, running simulations of events, and making important decisions. Here are some tips on how to provide your brain with a periodical breather. Get up and stretch or go for a short walk. Take time to listen to some music or participate in a creative activity, such as drawing, writing, or dancing. Just staring out the window will give your brain a chance to regroup.
