North Haven District and Curriculum

The North Haven Public School District has a mission of preparing productive students for an ever-changing world, the North Haven School District works with students, parents, teachers, and the greater community to meet the meets of all students in order to prepare them for life in the twenty-first century. Guided by the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics and the Connecticut Sate Department of Education, the North Haven School District works to prepare students to become productive global citizens.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Haven District Curriculum

Beginning in sixth grade/middle school, all students are required to read one book from a pre-selected list prior to the beginning of school. Those required summer readings continue throughout the remainder of the students’ academic career in the North Haven School District. Middle school students are expected to practice math skills over the summer and are given specific websites to review. In addition, based on a student’s test scores and examination results, students may be recommended for accelerated math starting in middle school.

At the high school level, students are required to complete summer assignments in both English and Mathematics. Students are offered a variety of courses at varying levels including Advanced Placement (AP) classes and a Creative Learning Program for gifted and talented students. The Connecticut Assessment System utilizes the Smarter Balanced assessment and the CMT/CAPT Science assessment at various grade levels to measure students on their skills and knowledge.

Keeping Informed: Recent North Haven Educational News

  • Convocation Speech - Superintendent Dr. Cronin delivered the Convocation Speech for the 2014-2015 school year in August. Laying the foundation and platform for the coming school year, Dr. Cronin hopes to make the North Haven School District a premier school district in the area.
  • CT Makes History - Connecticut boosts minimum wage becoming the first state to do so. By 2017, the state’s minimum wage will increase to $10.10 an hour and North Haven High School students look forward to higher wages at summer jobs and saving for college.
  • North Haven Middle School Project - The North Haven Middle School Project is in full effect working to create a modern educational facility with renovations of portions of the existing structure and addition of a new two story academic wing.

Chalk Talk: Test Taking Tips

Test taking can cause anxiety and anxiousness for many students who simply fear taking assessments and quizzes. However there are strategies that you can employ to help make test taking less stressful. First, take the time to review and study the information that will be on the test. Do not wait until the last minute to cram information; rather take time daily to review information and key terms. Before taking a test, make sure that you have a proper breakfast or lunch so that you can focus on the assessment not your appetite! While taking the test, make sure you read the directions and ask questions if you do not fully understand what you are being asked to do. Read the questions entirely and circle important works or terms that seem important. Read all answer choices fully and eliminate answers that you know are not correct. Finally choose the best answer choice and don’t second-guess yourself. Usually the first choice or your gut instinct is the correct one!
