Chalk Talk: Grocery Cart Classroom

Parents who are aware of what their children are learning in school can reinforce the concepts in their child’s classroom throughout their daily life experiences. Something as simple as going grocery shopping together can help children of all ages apply and see the relevance of the information they are getting in school. Small children can use their observational skills to describe the colors, sounds, and smells they are experiencing, using their senses to gather information about the world. Addition can be practiced in a number of ways – two apples, plus three oranges equals five pieces of fruit. As children’s addition skills advance, they can even start to tally the costs of the items in the cart and see if they are right when they get to the checkout register.
