Chalk Talk: How Music Positively Impacts Academics

Students that excel academically more often than not participate in music. The association between music and academics is strong. Instrumental and vocal music students demonstrate improved math and reading abilities over their peers. This is reflected in the higher average scores for music students on standardized tests of math and reading. The study of music is also correlated with an expanded worldview. Music students have a better understanding of the world in which they live because of their studies of music from around the world. Solo and ensemble performances help students refine their performance skills, while also learning how to work with other musicians and musical directors to perform music in a proficient manner. Additionally, research shows that the study of music is associated with improved decision-making skills. Children enrolled in music courses are less likely to engage in dangerous behaviors that negatively impact their health and wellness.
