Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Providence District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum focuses on Math and Language Arts, and builds student knowledge by guiding the curriculum from elementary to secondary school along major strands of learning. For instance, in Math, students learn about numeracy, algebraic relations, geometry and measurement, and methods for data analysis. During the early years, skill-based knowledge in each area is imparted, and as students move through the grades the content becomes more complex and focused. The goal is to bring about the ability to understand the best methods of solving problems.

Students at North Providence High School are held to rigorous graduation requirements. They must meet four multi-disciplinary expectations that address academics, communications, social and civic responsibilities. The development of these skills starts well before high school. For example, sixth graders are expected to read, write, and evaluate expressions. The learning expectations call for students to be able to communicate their knowledge in all subject areas.
