Chalk Talk: How to Achieve a Great Score on the Writing Portion of the SAT/ACT

The writing portion of the SAT or ACT can be difficult to ace. When studying with practice questions, it is very helpful to look at the provided explanations on how to write an effective essay. Knowing why a writing tactic is effective will help you gain the ability to actually apply it on test day. When faced with a writing prompt, make sure to read it in its entirety. This will ensure that you don’t skip over any important details. If you are asked to write an essay on your own viewpoint, be sure that you can support your argument with a few well-developed reasons or examples that stick to the topic. Some questions on the writing portion may also ask you to identify errors or improve sentences, which means having a thorough knowledge of grammar. When asked to identify errors in questions, first read the sentence quickly and ask yourself whether it needs to be revised or not. Are the underlined words necessary? A strategy that works for questions that ask you to improve sentences or paragraphs is to predict how to fix an error before looking at the answer choices.
