Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norton District Curriculum

Students in Norton have the opportunity to learn a second language as part of the district’s world languages curriculum. The goal of the curriculum is to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need in order to be effective communicators. Learners engage in language acquisition activities that develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students practice these skills in the context of interpersonal interactions, in presentations to groups, and by interpreting the meaning from messages they receive in verbal or written form.

The Norton financial literacy curriculum includes a survey of business education. Students learn about law as it relates to business practices, focusing on contracts, sales, and employment practices. Students deepen their understanding of illegal business procedures as well. Accounting is also a large part of the business education strand. Learners explore various accounting procedures and practices, and identify the ways in which accountants should conduct business in order to practice ethically. Students learn about international business practices and identify the advantages of having a business that expands beyond U.S. borders.

Chalk Talk: How to De-Stress

Teens can feel stress everyday from tests, homework, teasing and more. Parents can demonstrate some skills that the child can do to help themselves relax. First, show the teen how just by slowing down and taking a few deep breaths through the nose and out through the mouth, they can begin to feel more relaxed. Another tactic is, if it is convenient, to write their feelings in a journal to help them to work through a situation or to become more organized. Sometimes, talking with a friend or family member can also help by receiving guidance or support when needed. Hobbies are also a great way to relax when feeling stressed. Parents can begin by suggesting one or two at a time and then see which way works the best for the teen.
