Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norton Shores District Curriculum

The elementary science curriculum is broken into four categories that include science processes, physical science, life science, and earth science. The science processes portion of the curriculum deals with the scientific method and other inquiry processes which teach students how to think like a scientist. Topics in the physical science category range from matter to force and motion as students learn about the many scientific laws that exist. Life science includes the study of living things, such as plants and animals, and their life cycles.

The elementary Social Studies curriculum focuses on the four disciplines of history, geography, civics/government, and economics. Students start with familiar examples of these disciplines by learning about them in the context of their own lives. Starting in third grade, students will apply what they have learned about he four disciplines to the study of Michigan. They will be taught the states’ geography including both land and water features.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of School Field Trips

As school districts across the country deal with budget cuts, funding for school field trips has become a rare commodity. However, these trips are not just fun excursions; they hold valuable lessons and opportunities for students. Field trips offer students a level playing field no matter what their economic standing. For example, disadvantaged students who would never have the money to attend an opera performance may be able to experience such an event during a field trip. Field trips also offer students the chance to get hands-on experiences with what is being taught in the classroom. Seeing a historical monument or visiting a local farm make lessons come to life for students and often produce better academic results. Another benefit of field trips is that they allow students to bond outside of the classroom which is very important for class morale and dynamics. While field trips are known for being fun, they also have many other benefits for success.
