Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oberlin District Curriculum

Students in Oberlin can take a number of different high school math courses, including statistics and probability. Learners work with categorical and quantitative data to interpret linear models. Students also learn how to represent and summarize data using a single count or measurement variable. Using statistics, students acquire the ability to make inferences about the data, including from surveys, observational studies, and experiments. The rules of probability are emphasized as well. Students use independent and conditional probabilities to interpret data. They also learn to compute the probability of compound events using the uniform probability model.

The middle school visual arts curriculum prepares students to develop art pieces in various mediums. Learners identify and describe essential elements and principles required to produce art. Students examine art from numerous cultures throughout the world, comparing and contrasting the manner in which artists express their ideas, feelings, and opinions. Connections are drawn between art and other academic areas as well, with students identifying ideas, concepts, and processes common to other disciplines.
