Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ocean City District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Ocean City School District follows the guidelines set forth in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These guidelines establish rigorous benchmarks by which student achievement is assessed. Benchmarks are established at each grade level for nine core subject areas. By meeting or exceeding these benchmarks, students demonstrate their preparedness for post-secondary education or work.

A key component of the 21st Century life and careers curriculum is the study of the 16 federal career clusters. When studying these career clusters, students acquire skills that are important for success in any workplace. Students learn about ethics and responsibilities at work and gain an understanding of how ethical work procedures promote good business performance. Students identify the technological skills required in the modern workforce, including the use of the Internet, computers and computer programs. An examination of safety procedures is undertaken, as is an analysis of how each career cluster impacts the environment.

Chalk Talk: Three Tips for Paying for College

There are many things you can do to reduce the cost of your child’s college education. First, research potential sources of financial aid well before your child heads off to college. Many scholarships, grants and work study programs have early deadlines, and with increased competition for all available aid, the earlier you apply the better. Second, improve your aid eligibility by moving your assets around. The more disposable income you have, the less aid opportunities will be available to you. Putting money into a 529 college savings plan or into a retirement account will help shield that money from consideration in determining your financial aid eligibility. Finally, encourage your child to strategically apply to colleges. Rather than applying to a school where they would be middle-of-the-pack, have your child apply to one where they would be top of the class. Doing so will open up additional avenues for merit-based aid.
