Ogden District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Utah Core Standards are derived from the Common Core, a set of educational standards in use nationwide. The Common Core focuses on preparing students for success, whether in college or in a career, by ensuring that they have strong skills in Math and English that allow them to solve problems, think and read critically, and engage with the world in a knowledgeable way.

We currently cover the following Ogden-area school district: Ogden School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ogden District Curriculum

At the elementary school level, the schools use the Singapore Math program to meet the standards, using concrete examples, pictorial representations, and abstract manipulation of numbers. The schools provide a variety of programs to meet these goals in English, including professional development and the Reading Foundations framework. The elementary schools also enrich their students’ education through the arts, science fairs, and language classes.

Honors programs are available from seventh grade on. For high-performing high school students, there are a variety of options. One is the Lead the Way concurrent enrollment program for pre-engineering students, or taking concurrent enrollment classes in other areas, such as Anatomy and Physiology or US History. Another is the International Baccalaureate program. There is also the option of an Honors Diploma for students taking honors-level courses. The high schools offer advanced math options such as AP Statistics, AP Calculus, and IB Calculus.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Good Citizenship

More and more schools are beginning to emphasize citizenship and community support in their educational programs. The goals of these programs are to create students who not only meet certain academic criteria, but want to serve their communities and work for the common good. Programs can begin with service projects as early as elementary school, and can require students at all levels to find projects they want to work on which combine their passions with assistance to others. Many schools are even making a citizenship requirement for graduation! Schools today are focusing on helping students develop as well-rounded individuals, and this is a part of that process.
