Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oil City District Curriculum

Elementary students are immersed in reading and writing; students in middle school English literature continue a spiral curriculum that includes being able to read a story and describe the episodes of that story's plot, how the settings and characters interact as the story unfolds, and how different aspects within the story create important turning points for the characters as the plot develops. Students are tested to ensure they are achieving the standards each year using the Pennsylvania State School Assessments.

Students in the Oil City Area School District have the opportunity to take instruction online through the Cyber Academy, which is an advantage in a rural school district. At the same time, students can also take part in extracurricular activities in art, music, and athletics at their local schools. Students in high school also complete a Graduation Project, which is a culminating process that can include job shadowing and learning in different subject areas.

Chalk Talk: How Tutors Can Help Each Student

Whether your child lives is a rural area, a medium-sized city, or a large city, they will have to follow expectations set forth by the school district they attend in English/Language Arts, Math, Science, and other subjects. States have set subject-area standards to follow national initiatives such as the No Child Left Behind Act which define what Adequate Yearly Progress should be. If your child is struggling in any subject area, a skilled tutor can help them succeed, no matter where they live. Tutors can help students understand their best methods for learning, and offer professional advice on the types of connections to other learning opportunities which can be made.
