Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Okemos District Curriculum

The primary curriculum consists of developmentally appropriate benchmarks for knowledge acquisition in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, fine arts, physical education, and technology. Literacy education includes mastery of writing, reading, speaking, and listening in content-specific areas. In addition to the academic curriculum, students will receive reproductive health instruction beginning in fourth grade. Parents/guardians may opt out of this program at any time.

The secondary curriculum at OPS places more emphasis on college and/or career preparation. To do so, instruction for grades six through twelve increases in rigor and opportunity. Students receive training that is more specialized to post-secondary goals, in the following departments: fine arts (visual, applied, or music), business and computer education, English language arts, mathematics, physical education, science, social studies, special education, technology, and world languages. Okemos High School students have access to many advanced placement (AP) courses and have the option to learn skills through the Capital Area Career Center.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Montessori Programs in Preschool

The Montessori Method is a child-centered, developmentally appropriate curriculum that many schools have adopted. Some districts use this method in only a few classrooms, blending their students’ experiences. Other districts use the Montessori Method in an entire school or dedicate this philosophy to their curricula. Regardless, this method has many benefits for children, particularly from ages three to five. Because younger pupils are still honing their physical, emotional, and social skills, the Montessori Method may be a perfect fit. The curriculum is designed with age-specific development in mind. Students learn skills that are geared for their needs, such as physical activities, community trips, respect of social rules, and certain life skills. In addition to the actual “instruction”, which is mostly guiding child-led activities, most of the learning in a Montessori environment is play-based—a crucial element of preschool development. Children can choose what they want to do, constructing their own learning, which helps them understand natural order and self-discipline. The Montessori classroom must be organized well for little learners to grasp routines and remember the places of objects for activities.
