Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Okmulgee District Curriculum

In Math, the students are taught data analysis skills. The students, in order to find information and answer questions, will collect and record data onto charts and graphs. When reading a chart or graph, the students are taught how to identify the “theme” or the main idea, of what is depicted. After reading the chart or graph, the learners will have the ability to draw a conclusion from it.

In English Language Arts, the children, beginning in the primary grades, are exposed to technology to assist in reading comprehension. The teachers give the students many opportunities in technology with the use of iPads, Smartboards, computer programs, and online methods. The students have such opportunities in computer labs with the computer technology teacher, as well as in the classroom with the regular education teacher. Using technology in English Language Arts enables the students to experience variety in their reading success.

Chalk Talk: What Does the PTA Do?

The PTA, or Parent-Teacher Association is a group of parents, teachers, and community members that organizes events and fundraisers for the good of the school. Many schools have organizations that are their “backbone,” such as the PTA or PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization). The members fully support the school by motivating the students to do their best by sponsoring fun events for them and their families in order to develop or increase school pride. The PTA purchases needed materials for the schools as well. Schools really appreciate their PTA!
