Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Olean District Curriculum

The Olean City School District is focused on meeting the approved Common Core Curriculum state standards for the State of New York. In English and Language Arts, students focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking to develop a command of the language. In that process, students will learn how to research, understand facts and concepts, and use the language to analyze texts.

In Mathematics, students in elementary school will begin with learning numbers and computational skills and move on to the basics of geometry and algebra. The study of algebra and geometry will continue through middle school and into high school, where students will also learn probability and statistics. The high school curriculum prepares students for Regents exams in addition to offering a wide variety of additional coursework including Advanced Placement courses.

Keeping Informed: Recent Olean Educational News

  • Focus District - The Olean City School District has been designated a Focus District as part of the New York State Education Department Board of Regents accountability system. The state provides support and assistance to districts where there students are not meeting guidelines for proficiency in subjects such as Mathematics, and English and Language Arts. The Olean Intermediate Middle School has been identified as a Focus School and will receive curriculum, and academic intervention support.
  • Souper Bowl of Caring - Sophomores from Olean High School recently participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring which provides contributions to the Olean Food Pantry. The sophomore class was in charge of the food drive and accepted donations from students, staff and the community of Olean to collect more than 3,000 lbs of food and more than $600 in donations. Area churches and local businesses participated in the food drive.
  • Community Outreach - In an effort to help schools that were affected by the Superstorm Sandy, the Connect 4 schools of Olean, Allegany Limestone, Portville and Hinsdale gathered together to raise more than $2,820. The fundraising occurred through the auspices of the NYSCOSS’s Schools Helping Schools Program. The donations will be used to provide for student field trips that parents are no longer able to afford.

A great website for students, teachers and parents is called the Great Plant Escape which is sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension. The site shows children step by step the importance of plants as they solve a mystery with Detective LePlant. There is also a teacher’s guide and examples of projects and experiments that children can participate in as they learn about the world of plants.
