Chalk Talk: Letters of Recommendation

A teacher recommendation is usually a page long or shorter, written by a teacher who’s taught a student in a classroom junior or senior year. When a college requires a recommendation, this is who they want to hear from. Some colleges will accept additional recommendations. These are recommendations that shed some new light on a student. They should only be included if they have something new and different to say about a student that hasn’t been covered elsewhere. Getting the principal or head of a school, or even a celebrity, to write a recommendation might seem like a good idea, but what is that person actually going to say about you as a student? If the recommender actually has some necessary insight—a boss, for example, or a trainer or coach for a student athlete who will continue to play in college—then the recommendation can be very useful.
