Olney District and Curriculum

Students in Olney that attend public school do so within the Montgomery County Public School system. The district’s overall mission is to prepare students that are career and college ready. To do so, the district has implemented a rigorous curriculum that challenges students to go beyond what they think is possible. With in-class and out-of-class learning experiences that allow kids to apply what they’ve learned to real-life scenarios, students are able to make connections between what they learn in school and how that learning applies in the real world. Preparation for life in the 21st century is emphasized as well.

We currently cover the following Olney-area school district: Montgomery County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Olney District Curriculum

Olney’s students can participate in a world languages curriculum that facilitates the development of second language skills. Once elementary students select a target language of study, they begin learning how to read, write, and speak common words and phrases. Students learn appropriate parts of speech, and discover how to carry on brief conversations with others. Middle school learners work on the presentational level, in which they provide information to other students in past, present, and future tenses. To develop these skills more deeply, students ask and answer questions, give or follow directions, or write short messages.

The math curriculum in Olney includes various high school offerings, from Algebra I and II to Geometry. In Algebra I, students examine the relationships between quantities and explore how to use equations to solve problems. Quantitative reasoning is also an area of emphasis, as is gaining the ability to examine the structure of expressions. Systems of equations are addressed as well, with students learning how to use different representations to solve complex problems.

Chalk Talk: Why Children Need Sports

Sports, be they individual or team-based, are an integral component of K-12 education. Involvement in sports gives kids an opportunity to engage in physical activities, stay healthy, and maintain wellness. Sports are also a great stress reliever. Kids that play sports can blow off steam and energy, which improves mood. There are academic and social benefits as well. Sports teach kids how to prioritize tasks and manage their time wisely. Research shows that children who play sports have improved concentration and a greater capacity for goal setting. On the social side, student-athletes develop more refined communication skills because of the need to communicate with and support their teammates. They also demonstrate a greater affinity for teamwork and an improved capacity for taking responsibility when things go wrong.
