Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Opp District Curriculum

Core academic learning is conducted in Math, Science, English, History and Languages, and the curriculum is designed to build yearly so that students are able to use prior knowledge in their acquisition of new knowledge. The reason behind this is that it helps access students’ reflective thinking which brings about other types of higher-order thinking skills like analysis, evaluation and reasoning.

The learning potential of each student is unlocked with the teachers in Opp. This school system is accredited, and offers much selection for the students. The teachers in Opp use a wide variety of teaching techniques to deliver the instruction needed, and they use valid and reliable assessments to drive this instruction. Small-group instruction, gifted instruction, tiered assignments at various levels ensure that all students’ needs are being met.

This community all-day event is so popular, and Mr. JP Jones is the one who created this day of fun! There are so many events at this all day rodeo, such as a beauty pageant, arts and crafts, the snakes, snake racing, activities for kids, and great food and live bands!
  • P.T.O. - The Opp Elementary Schools PTO uses the fundraising money in the fall to pay for things throughout the year. They pay for all students to go on their field trips, bus driver fees and gas fees. Chalk Talk: What Does Self-Contained Mean?

If your child is in a self-contained classroom, this mean that your child stays in the same classroom throughout the day and the teacher instructs all of the subjects. In a self-contained classroom, children do attend electives, such as PE, Art, music, library in another classroom, but the majority of the day is spent within one room with the same teacher. The day is broken into subject areas, and the teacher adheres to a schedule. The children keep on a consistent schedule; each subject area is taught at a specific time of the day. Self-contained classrooms really give the teacher the opportunity to get to know the students and they usually have a real sense of community!
