Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orange District Curriculum

At the elementary level, students complete coursework in reading, English/Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies, world language, health, physical education, and library media, and music. Progressing to the middle and high school level, students are exposed to further areas such as business, American studies, technology education, and family and consumer sciences. A variety of elective courses are available at the secondary level as well as honors and pre-college programs.

The school places a high value on student retention and graduation rates as well as college and exit exam scores. The school also values the long-term achievement of its students. It strives to encourage students to be life-long learners who take control of their own learning needs and are engaged in the process. These students are more likely to achieve success in their own lives and are more likely to be engaged and active in their communities. Teachers challenge and engage students for a post-high school life.

Chalk Talk: Multiple Intelligences Theory: Highlighting Spatial/Visual Intelligence

Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory was brought to light in the 1980s and shifted many viewpoints on the traditional idea of intelligences. Viewing intelligence as a variety of categories rather than one single general entity, Gardner chose 7 intelligences to meet his original criterion and later added 2 more intelligences to his list. Many people view themselves as visual learners so let’s see what that means in terms of MI theory. Visual intelligence implies that think in pictures and images. You are likely able to conjure up images inside your head in order to better understand concepts and ideas. Visual learners may be artistic and like to paint, draw, and read maps easily. Learning is best through drawings and visual aids for visual/spatial intelligence. Possible career choices include architect, artist, graphic designer, or photographer.
