Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orangeburg District Curriculum

In their math classes, student study concepts at a greater depth beginning in the elementary grades. They have a smaller range of standards to focus on in order to master them at a greater degree. For instance, when students are taught about patterning at an early age, this helps them see the relationships they will look for in algebraic operations. This promotes understanding and retention over time and improves their competency to solve similar more difficult problems in future courses.

During the course of English Language Arts study, the common core incorporates a range of texts including both non-fiction and literature. Students practice synthesizing and writing skills that translate into other content areas, such as social studies and science, as well as, into a university classroom and the workforce. They learn how to evaluate information, use graphs and charts, and to bring in their own knowledge to inform their reading.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a Tutor

There a several factors to consider when choosing a tutor for your child. First and foremost, consider your child’s needs and the tutor’s abilities to teach that subject. All tutors have strengths, and while someone may be a great tutor, they may not be the best tutor for your son or daughter. Secondly, all tutors have a style of teaching. It is important that you find a tutor whose teaching style matches the way your child learns. When you first meet the prospective tutors, have a conversation about how they plan to teach and their educational philosophy. Finally, you, as the parent, should feel confident in the tutor. If you feel great about the tutoring relationship, your child will too.
