The Ottumwa School District is dedicated to making sure that every” student is prepared with the tools they need to succeed beyond the doors of the school. There are several ways that they work toward fulfilling this goal, but the heart of this goal is in the curriculum that infuses all classrooms with developing skills in communication, global citizenship, and building a strong work ethic while learning the skills they need for academic success in Mathematics, Science, and Language Arts.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ottumwa District Curriculum
As with other Iowa cities, the Ottumwa School District’s curriculum follows the standards set forth in the Iowa Core Curriculum Standards. The Language Arts curriculum centers on moving students through basic reading comprehension, to building vocabulary and understanding the basics of composition and mechanics of grammar, to combining reading comprehension with creative composition to allow students to develop a wide variety of communication skills.
In Mathematics, students progress from a basic understanding of defining and working with numbers in the early years of elementary school to understanding operations and basic algebra in middle school to advanced operations and functions in algebra and geometry in the final years of high school creating a well-developed set of logic skills with real-world applications of mathematical principles
