Owen Sound District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Bluewater District School Board and Bruce Grey Catholic School District Board both incorporate the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum into teaching and learning. The curriculum brings together the big picture concepts that drive instruction with the foundational skills they learn as well as develop critical thinking and communication skills. Each content area will have a set of core outcomes for learning that will ensure students develop the requisite competencies. At the high school level, the curriculum is drawn up for each specific course and also includes comprehensive frameworks for co-operative education, outdoor and environmental education, and high skills specialist fields.

We currently cover the following Owen Sound-area school districts: Bluewater District School Board and Bruce Grey Catholic School District Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Owen Sound District Curriculum

Students in Owen Sound are instructed by the standards of learning set forth in the Ontario Curriculum. Students will be prepared for their future academic and career goals with a thorough foundation that is grounded in the basic skills and the higher order thinking within each subject. The curriculum provides a clear manner in which to deliver this knowledge across the content areas. Teachers create lesson plans using their and the school's materials, and all students receive an education that promotes the highest standards of learning.

The curriculum is a way of organizing each subject area into topics of learning that form units of instruction. For example, when fifth grade students use prior knowledge, they describe how this existing knowledge and their personal experiences contribute to their understanding of new information, and they use their prior knowledge of organizational structures such as tables of contents, indices, and headings to locate information and construct meaning from it.

Chalk Talk: Bandura’s Social Learning Theory

Bandura believed that learning occurs through observing others in their environment, not that it is innate. Furthermore, he agreed with the behaviorist B.F. Skinner that teachers should respond to behaviors with positive or negative reinforcement in order to make sure desired behaviors continue. In fact, reinforcement can serve as students’ motivation to imitate behaviors. The process of teachers modeling behaviors and their students imitating what they do is seen all of the time in classrooms. It is important for teachers to capture their students’ attention and to effectively model ways of doing things so that students can successfully reproduce these behaviors at a later time. .
