Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Palisades Park District Curriculum

As mentioned above, curriculum development in the Palisades Park Public School District is driven by the recommendations of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. Together, these standards establish rigorous benchmarks for student learning in grades K-12.

A primary component of the visual and performing arts standards is the ability to present performance art. In the early elementary grades, students are expected to acquire skills they need in order to produce dance sequences. Students learn how to move to the beat of music and adjust their movements to changes in tempo. In later elementary grades students learn how to create and perform improvised dance sequences both with and without music. In middle school, students learn how to convey historical, social and political themes through dance movements that are based on kinesthetic principles. Once in high school, students are required to participate in theme-based solo and ensemble pieces that demonstrate musicality and artistry.

Chalk Talk: Why Kids Need Art

As states have increasingly emphasized the importance of core subjects like math and language arts, visual and performing arts classes have been somewhat shoved to the side as less relevant or important. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Visual and performing arts classes provide a number of important benefits for students that improve their performance in other classes. Students who engage in the arts tend to have better attention spans, greater persistence and more creative vision than students who don’t take art classes. There is a positive correlation between participating in the arts and increased geometric reasoning skills. Additionally, students with more art credits perform better on the ACT test. In short, studying the arts fosters the development of crucial learning skills that kids need in order to achieve their highest possible potential.
