Palo Alto District and Curriculum

The schools in Palo Alto use curriculum specific to the academic subjects and programs of study. For English/Language Arts and Mathematics, the schools follow the framework of the Common Core Standards. In English/Language Arts this covers reading literature and informational texts, writing for a range of purposes, and critical speaking and listening skills. In Math, the Common Core Standards provide the framework by which students develop skills in numerical operations, algebraic operations, geometry and measurement, and data analysis over their school years. Highly qualified teachers promote this skills development by holding each student individually accountable. Teachers furthermore encourage students’ individual development and to pursue their particular areas of interest.

We currently cover the following Palo Alto-area school district: Palo Alto Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Palo Alto District Curriculum

Students in Palo Alto take part in an English language arts curriculum that prepares them to be effective writers. Students learn how to write position papers that support their opinions with clear evidence. Learners work on creating introductions that organize their ideas and evidence in a clearly-defined manner. Students learn how to support their ideas using credible evidence and appropriate resources, noting also how to cite resources they use to supplement their ideas. Using effective language is a topic of study as well. Learners develop an understanding of words, phrases, and clauses that clarify their reasoning and link ideas together.

As students progress in their education and take specialized courses like language immersion programs, Advanced Placement (AP) or enter an International Baccalaureate Program (IB), there are also specific curriculum that ensure students meet the expectations of the courses. Having curricular standards allows for assessments to be given that are aligned to the standards which shows how students are meeting the expectations and if additional instruction is required.

Chalk Talk: Helping a Bullied Child

When a child is being bullied by another, they may be timid about telling a parent about it. To help them see that they have an ally a parent can share a time when they have had similar experiences. This helps set the stage for the child to share. When they do share, parents need to keep control of their feelings and calmly discuss the situation. The child may then be ready to talk about ways to deal with the bullies. If this is a serious problem the parent should bring it to the attention of the school administration. When talking with the teacher, parents need to remember that the teacher is there to help and the teacher and the administrators want to prevent the bullying.
