Parker District and Curriculum

The Douglas County School System follows the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) which is a comprehensive framework for learning from elementary school through high school. One aspect of the CAS is its Extended Evidence Outcomes, a series of objectives that are designed to ensure students are graduating with skills that connect them to lifelong learning and productive work opportunities. Recognizing that students will be graduating into a highly technological, and increasingly global world, the learning standards and expected outcomes guide learning so that students are adaptable to the work and learning opportunities they will face.

We currently cover the following Parker-area school district: Douglas County School System.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Parker District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum has developed an integrated approach to literacy and communication teaching that focuses on the ways in which these skills are used in other areas of learning. Reading is taught so that students understand the different comprehension strategies applied to different types of text from literary works to opinion pieces. Reading non-fiction and writing in analytic or informative modes are heavily emphasized so that students can read and communicate effectively.

The Math curriculum emphasizes the topics of operations, algebraic thinking, geometry and spatial awareness, and data analysis. Starting from the elementary school years, students work with ratios and proportions as the basis for their data analysis skills. In high school, they can take statistics and further develop their sense of how to work with numbers and how to use the outcomes from statistical analyses.

Chalk Talk: Learning Style Compatibility

A learning style compatible classroom is a classroom in which the teaching and learning experience parallels the way the brain learns. Current brain research suggests that the learning process is far more complex then we had anticipated. Teachers need to learn that engaging the mind of the learner is key to the learning process. Teachers need to create learner centered instruction in their classrooms. This includes creating learning style and multiple intelligence experiences for the learner though an enriched environment and a focus on providing the students with a meaningful context that makes connections to what students know. A learning style compatible classroom is an active, noisy classroom that has students working in small groups or pairs, and provides students with hands on learning and thoughtful conversation. Learners thrive in a classroom environment that supports learning by trial and error, inquiry and risk taking. In this type of environment the brain is able to function at its highest level.
