Chalk Talk: The Benefits of a Public University

For many students, the primary benefit of a public university is a lower tuition rate. Because public universities are subsidized by the state, they tend to have much lower—as much as one tenth—a rate of tuition than a private college. There are some private colleges with comparable tuitions, and a competitive student might qualify for scholarships and the like which bring down costs so that they are comparable to a public university. Public universities are also considered by many to be easier to get into. This is because the state mandates that they accept a certain percentage of in-state students. Some public universities are very selective, though, but none are as selective as the most selective private colleges.
