Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pequannock Township District Curriculum

The district has developed a comprehensive K-12 curriculum that outlines what students should learn and know, how content should be delivered and how to measure student progress. Benchmarks to measure student learning and performance have been established for each content area at each grade, such that student progress can be consistently measured over time.

An essential component of the language arts curriculum is the speaking and listening strand. The elementary school curriculum helps students become good conversational partners by emphasizing appropriate ways to share information, how to follow class discussion rules and how to listen intently as others speak. In middle school, students learn how to deliver oral presentations using appropriate voice, tone, volume and eye contact. Once in high school, the emphasis shifts to making positive contributions to class discussions through question and answering, probing reasoning and evidence, and expressing thoughtful remarks.

Chalk Talk: How Technology Is Used in Education

As our world becomes more and more reliant on technology, it’s important that students learn how to use today’s gadgets and gizmos to complete their work, and not just play games or check social media feeds. Giving students access to laptops, tablets and the Internet allows them to reach a deeper level of understanding by accessing photos, videos, simulations and other educational media that wouldn’t otherwise be available in the classroom. By using technology, students learn how to collaborate with others – who may or may not be in the same room – and gain valuable experience using instant messaging, video conferencing, e-mail and other tools to complete tasks. Perhaps most importantly, utilizing technology allows kids to become more personally productive. By having a calendar, calculator, word processing programs, the Internet and a host of other valuable tools right at their fingertips, kids can learn how to manage their daily schedules and work in a more efficient manner.
