Perth East District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Perth East follow an elementary and secondary curriculum designed to guide the learning process in all core academic subjects and to offer students a range of enrichment electives as well. The academic development of students is overseen by the establishment of clear expectations for learning at each grade level. These expectations represent the essential skills, knowledge and conceptual understanding inherent to the subject. Province-wide assessments are based on the curricular expectations and measure student proficiency and the instructional needs for students.

We currently cover the following Perth East-area school districts: Avon Maitland District School Board and Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Perth East District Curriculum

In Math, students begin with the basics of numeracy, measurement, operations, and comprehension of graphs, charts and other representations of numerical information. In high school, students develop their understanding of math concepts in analytic geometry, algebra, investigative techniques, and the use of technology and computation tools. Students will work with linear relations, 3-D figures, and geometric investigations and are expected to be able to communicate and show their procedures effectively.

There are many different instructional approaches that teachers can take to teach the content in their subject. Students will receive direct instruction, guided instruction, and opportunities to self-direct their learning. Learning through project-based work has become a central facet to instruction and assessment because of the learning opportunities within designing and seeing through a project and what the end result will show in terms of a students ability.

Chalk Talk: How Can a Tutor Help My Child?

Tutors are able to support a student's learning in a variety of ways. Tutoring sessions target key topics and concepts with which a student may be having difficulty. For assignments and tests, tutoring sessions can provide the support that enables a student to plan and execute an effective study approach. A tutor will work individually with a child and understand the ways in which they learn best and what obstacles are present in their learning efforts. As an education professional, the tutor will be able to use optimal instructional approaches while also recommending ways to overcome challenges to learning.
