Petawawa District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Student learning has been planned, according to the Ontario Curriculum, so that knowledge grows out of a base of fundamentals followed by the chance to study topics in-depth. The curriculum details the plan for elementary and secondary students in each academic subject and within the elective programs available. Each subject framework describes the expected learning outcomes for each grade level and the broader functional thinking skills that students develop. The curriculum also strikes a balance between students receiving the instruction they need and being able to work at a self-paced level.

We currently cover the following Petawawa-area school districts: Renfrew County Catholic District School Board and Renfrew County District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Petawawa District Curriculum

In Science, students start out with an experiential learning program bringing in topics of life, earth, and physical science. Students will be taught about and experiment with concepts of matter, structure, and mechanisms and learn fundamental scientific facts and principles. When they enter high school, the foundation broadens so that students learn about concepts in biology, earth and space science, chemistry and physics with emphasis on how these concepts relate to everyday life.

The English curriculum has been designed so that elementary students develop basic literacy skills in phonics and whole language understanding. The strands of reading, writing, communicating and media studies is a part of the K-12 continuum of learning and students move from basic acts of understanding to more complex acts of analysis and interpretations. With this, students are able to analyze and create texts using the skills developed.

Chalk Talk: Curriculum & Assessment

Developing a common assessment involves determining its purpose (diagnostic, formative, or summative), aligning it with the Essential Outcomes identified within the curricular unit (including matching its rigor and format with that of the outcome), identifying what mastery of the outcome looks like, and coming up with a method to track students’ progress against the outcome. The prerequisite skills or knowledge necessary for students to master the essential outcome, and enrichment (how students will extend their learning to greater levels of complexity). General outcome expectations reflect on the standards, for example asking a Language Arts student to demonstrate using strategies and cues, responding to texts, understanding forms and elements, and creating original texts. With a curriculum designed to build on prior year's skills, it is important that all teachers are providing the same preparation to students so as they move into different classes or schools, the growth is uninterrupted.
