Phillipsburg District and Curriculum

The Phillipsburg School District is comprehensive in nature, with educational programs for students from preschool through the twelfth grade. There are nearly 3,000 students in the district, with over half of them attending the town’s high school. Numerous neighboring communities send students to Phillipsburg High School, which accounts for that school’s large enrollment. The overarching mission of the district is to foster the development of the whole child – in academics, athletics, emotionally and socially. With high academic standards for all students, dozens of extra-curricular activities available and the support of parents and the community, the district fulfills its mission to produce well-rounded students.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Phillipsburg District Curriculum

The curriculum of the Phillipsburg School District helps students meet the goals of the district as well as the objectives of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. The learning targets established through these state and nationally adopted standards ensure that all students receive a well-rounded, comprehensive education.

The district believes that all students should graduate with a sound understanding of financial literacy. Beginning in elementary school, students learn about how to manage their money. Students identify the difference between financial needs and wants, and identify ways to earn and save money. In middle school, students examine how the economy can improve or hurt one’s wealth, and learn about simple strategies to build wealth over time. The high school curriculum focuses on practical matters. Students learn about the necessity of having a “rainy day” fund, the dangers of overusing credit cards and how to prioritize financial expenditures based on need and priority.

Chalk Talk: Three Reasons to Engage in Community Service

In addition to the many benefits communities derive from community service projects, students who volunteer their time gain valuable knowledge and skills. First, volunteering gives students professional experience that can help them find internships, work experiences or find paid employment. Second, students may discover aptitudes or talents they didn’t know they had, in addition to learning new skills through their work. Lastly, giving back through volunteerism allows students to gain a sense of civic responsibility by investing their time and effort into making life better for others. Making a difference in the community not only helps kids gain valuable skills, but also gives them a sense of accomplishment and pride and improves their feelings of self-worth.
