Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pitman District Curriculum

The philosophy of Common Core is to encourage independent, critical thinkers who can thrive in any national or global setting they find themselves in to ensure them after high school graduation. To develop each student’s range of skills applications, Pitman’s elementary programs ensure students are exposed to technology in all core content classes by providing laptop carts and Smart boards for each teacher and providing group work, and hands-on instruction.

Both Pitman Middle School and Pitman High School place a high premium on the development of character through their Renaissance Incentive Program. This program aims to recognize student excellent in academics, behavior, and attendance though a three-tiered reward system. Students who rank Gold status earn privileges such as discounts to class dances, being first in cafeteria lines, and earning 5 raffle tickets for end-of-term raffles. Students are reevaluated at the end of each of three terms.

Chalk Talk: Fostering Curiosity in Children

Children have endless curiosity, although there are certain areas they will likely develop a special interest in. Fostering creativity in children should focus on the activities that most interest them, and then bring in opportunities to explore and extend from there. You can go so far as to take your child on a field trip to a place where experts in the field work, such as a museum or zoo or challenge your child to create a “how-to” book on their topic of interest. Then, challenge them to find information, graphics, charts, and photos from their nonfiction reading sources to include in their writing. In essence, help them become in charge of their own learning, and show them how reading is an essential tool in the path of discovery. By playing into your child’s natural curiosity on the subject, you’re not only creating a life-long reader, you’ll be creating a life-long learner, with a passion for exploration of their interests.
