Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pittsgrove Township District Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the recommendations of two documents. The Common Core State Standards provide guidance for what students should learn in math and language arts classes. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards establishes guidelines for student learning in seven additional subject areas: technology, world languages, health and physical education, visual and performing arts, 21st Century life and careers, science and social studies.

The Common Core State Standards outlines the foundational skills that elementary students should acquire in order to be effective readers. Students begin by learning the processes of reading, such as following words from left to right. Phonemic training also takes place to ensure that students understand spoken words and sounds. By third grade, students are able to deconstruct words and recognize common prefixes and suffixes. Students also practice reading aloud with grade-level accuracy, rate and expression. By the time children complete fifth grade, they are able to read and decode complex, unfamiliar words.

Chalk Talk: Why Technology Is Good for Education

Utilizing popular technologies to enhance education is a great way to get students active in class, engaged in the material, and curious about a wide variety of topics. Students in technology-rich classrooms are able to take more ownership of their learning through independent investigation, rather than sitting passively while taking notes from the board. Technology allows students to work at their own pace and enjoy greater levels of productivity. Technology also gives students the ability to explore the world, learning about other peoples and cultures right from their own desk. The interactive nature of technology means that students can watch videos, play educational games, interact with students in other countries and other highly beneficial activities that make learning fun and relevant.
