Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Plainville District Curriculum

The middle school’s English language arts department emphasizes the four literacy skills. These literary processes are vital because they allow students to be independent readers and writers, build strong content knowledge, write for a variety of purposes and audiences, critique others, value evidence, understand multiple perspectives and cultures, and effectively use technology and digital media. The grading rubrics cover all these skills so that students are able to understand how they are progressing with each set of skills.

The high school has also set one main academic expectation for each of the following content areas: fine and performing arts (art and music), information technology and business, English language arts, foreign languages, math, science, physical education and wellness, and history and social studies. For each of the independent learning expectations, there is a description as to what it means for a student to be advanced, proficient, or to need improvement in that area. The expectations at this level aim for the development of critical thinking skills in each subject.
