Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Point Pleasant District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Point Pleasant Borough Schools is undertaken to ensure that students meet or exceed the requirements of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards establish what students should learn at each grade level in math and language arts. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide similar guidance for student learning in other core subjects.

The district’s math curriculum focuses student learning on the real-world application of mathematical principles, skills and knowledge. Students acquire problem-solving skills, develop abstract reasoning skills and learn to work in a detail-oriented manner. A solid foundation of math skills is developed in elementary school, which includes basic math, such as addition and subtraction, as well as more advanced skills such as calculating ratios. Chalk Talk: The Value of Inclusivity in Education

In the past, students of varying ability levels were segregated and grouped together to receive instruction. It is now understood that this practice is not beneficial for students, whether they are of high or low academic, cognitive or physical functioning. Inclusive classrooms facilitate better learning regardless of ability level – with appropriate support from teachers, students of high and low ability levels can work together and benefit from one another’s contributions. In addition to academic benefits, inclusivity promotes well-being and self-esteem for all students and promotes a sense of community and togetherness. Lastly, inclusive classrooms provide students with a firsthand experience of equal rights and equal worth. Through classroom interactions with students different from themselves, students gain valuable insight into what it means to be tolerant, aware and sensitive to the diversity around them.
