Chalk Talk: Pros and Cons of Late Start

Some school districts have implemented a late start – a school day that begins as much as an hour later than the traditional 8:00 am start time – in order to improve academic performance and student attitudes at the high school level. Research shows that students at high schools with a later start time indeed have higher grades in core areas of math, English, social studies, and science. Standardized test scores are also higher on average at high schools with a later start time. Attendance is up at these schools as well, while discipline referrals are down. However, there are some drawbacks to later school days. Families that have children at other schools with a traditional start time may experience difficulties in getting their children to school. Similarly, with high schools in session well beyond when elementary and middle schools release for the day, transportation issues again arise. High school students that have sports practice or after-school jobs are also committed to those duties later into the evening, which may impact time with family and homework time.
