Chalk Talk: Social Media as a Learning Tool

Parents and teachers alike spend a good deal of time worrying about how much time kids spend on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media networks. While this concern is certainly warranted, there are a number of educational benefits that social media present for students. Teachers can engage students in activities like research of current events by exploring trending topics on Twitter. Twitter is also useful as a communication tool for teachers. They can create hashtags for students to keep track of certain topics or to submit ideas or responses to homework. Facebook is a great communication tool as well. Students can use it to engage with students in other states or nations, or use it to contact respected experts in science, math, social studies, and other school subjects. To bring studies to life, teachers can utilize Instagram or YouTube. Studies show that pictures and videos are extremely useful in helping students better understand complex concepts.
